Copy of a portion of the Hopwood Polio Scrapbook owned by the daughter of Cleveland physician Dr. Howard H. Hopwood, containing newspaper articles about the Sabin Oral Sundays (SOS) polio vaccination program.
These articles, published between May 27 and June 23, 1962, describe the course and outcome of the first round of oral vaccinations given to residents of Cuyahoga County under the SOS program on May 27 and June 3 of that year. This vaccination consisted of three drops of a vaccine containing Type I poliomyelitis virus on a sugar cube. These articles also describe the lead-up to the second round of SOS, which officially began on June 24 and which involved a vaccination against Type III of poliomyelitis.
