  3. This collection contains a small percentage of correspondence, mostly of a personal nature. The other manucript materials consist of papers on various medical and literary topics. The vast majority of the collection is made up of published matter, either in original or reprinted form. Dates cover the years 1894 to 1983, with the bulk of the material falling into the 1920s and 1930s. The published materials fall into several categories including biographical, medical, historical, and literary, reflecting the varied interests of the family members. Material on medical topics bulks largest for Edward Fitch Cushing, whose interest was pediatrics, and Harvey Williams Cushing, whose field was neurology and neurosurgery. Literary materials bulk the largest for Henry Kirke Cushing (unpublished) and Harvey Williams Cushing (published). None of these collections should be considered to give a complete picture of any of the men. The papers of Erastus Cushing and Henry Kirke Cushing can be found at the Western Reserve Historical Society (MSS 433), and the papers of Harvey Williams Cushing were deposited in the Yale Medical Library.

  4. Copy of a portion of the Hopwood Polio Scrapbook owned by the daughter of Cleveland physician Dr. Howard H. Hopwood, containing newspaper articles about the Sabin Oral Sundays (SOS) polio vaccination program. These articles, published between May 27 and June 23, 1962, describe the course and outcome of the first round of oral vaccinations given to residents of Cuyahoga County under the SOS program on May 27 and June 3 of that year. This vaccination consisted of three drops of a vaccine containing Type I poliomyelitis virus on a sugar cube. These articles also describe the lead-up to the second round of SOS, which officially began on June 24 and which involved a vaccination against Type III of poliomyelitis.

  6. Copy of a portion of the Hopwood Polio Scrapbook owned by the daughter of Cleveland physician Dr. Howard H. Hopwood, containing newspaper articles about the Sabin Oral Sundays (SOS) polio vaccination program. These articles, published between July 20, 1961 and May 26, 1962, detail the plans on the part of Dr. Albert B. Sabin and the Cleveland Academy of Medicine under Drs. Howard H. Hopwood, Jr., and Charles L. Leedham to develop the program, which consisted of offering free oral vaccinations against three types of polio to residents of Cuyahoga County in various public locations on Sunday afternoons. The articles contain information on the organizers' goals, the locations of vaccination centers, and the preparation and promotion of the program, which officially began its first round on May 27, 1962. Also included are articles on early trial runs of the program in Medina County and Lyndhurst, Ohio and Pima and Maricopa County, Arizona published during this date range.

  7. This collection documents the personal and professional life of Dr. Marshall O. Terry, graduate of the Cleveland Homeopathic Hospital College (1872), appointed Surgeon General of the State of New York (1895), director of the medical department of the New York State National Guard (1898). He retired from active practice in 1905. The collection contains correspondence, articles written by Terry, photographs of personal and professional matters, newspaper clippings, ephemera. The collection was donated by Terry and Dorothea Warren in memory of the Terry Family in August 2016.

This vaccination consisted of three drops of a vaccine containing Type III poliomyelitis virus on a sugar cube. These articles also describe the lead-up to the third round of vaccinations, scheduled for July 22 and 29 and intended to immunize the population of Cuyahoga County against Type II of polio.

  18. City SOS Drive Praised by Surgeon General - Copy of an article from the Hopwood Polio Scrapbook owned by the daughter of Cleveland physician Dr. Howard H. Hopwood, containing newspaper articles about the Sabin Oral Sundays (SOS) polio vaccination program. This article, published in July 1962, describes the outcome of the SOS oral vaccination program, which concluded in Cuyahoga County on July 29, 1962. The program involved distributing three vaccinations, which each consisted of three drops of a vaccine containing one type of poliomyelitis virus on a sugar cube, over six Sundays at various locations throughout Cuyahoga County. In this article, Dr. Luther L. Terry, then Surgeon General, congratulates the county for the successful program, during which more than ninety percent of the county's residents were vaccinated.
