Scope & Content

This collection contains a small percentage of correspondence, mostly of a personal nature. The other manucript materials consist of papers on various medical and literary topics. The vast majority of the collection is made up of published matter, either in original or reprinted form. Dates cover the years 1894 to 1983, with the bulk of the material falling into the 1920s and 1930s.

The published materials fall into several categories including biographical, medical, historical, and literary, reflecting the varied interests of the family members.

Material on medical topics bulks largest for Edward Fitch Cushing, whose interest was pediatrics, and Harvey Williams Cushing, whose field was neurology and neurosurgery. Literary materials bulk the largest for Henry Kirke Cushing (unpublished) and Harvey Williams Cushing (published).

None of these collections should be considered to give a complete picture of any of the men. The papers of Erastus Cushing and Henry Kirke Cushing can be found at the Western Reserve Historical Society (MSS 433), and the papers of Harvey Williams Cushing were deposited in the Yale Medical Library.
