In the 1970's it became apparent that the addition of metals (such as copper) to polyethane IUD's would improve both efficiency and tolerance. The IUD slowly releases copper into the uterine cavity. Copper stops sperm from making their way up through the uterus into the tubes, thus preventing fertilization. If fertilization were to occur, the IUD would prevent the fertilized egg from successfully implanting is in the lining of the uterus. Among typical couples who initiate use of this IUD, less than 1% will experience an accidental pregnancy in the first year. http://www.gynob.emory.edu/familyplanning/copperT.cfm The initial research on copper IUD's was undertaken by Dr. Howard Tatum. Dr. Tatum invented the T-paltform, feeling that since it was smaller and conformed better to the shape of the uterine cavity, bleeding, cramping and expulsion should be lower. the Platform alone was only 82% effective, but with copper wire, suggested by Dr. Jaime Zipper, it became as effective as the Saf-T-Coil and Lippes Loop (State of the Art of the IUD; Liber Amicorum Professor M.
